Juried Photography Exhibitions and Publications
Call for Submissions:

THE EDGES OF NIGHT: DAWN AND DUSK

The edges of night, the dawn and dusk times, are magical moments for photographers.  From the rosy first light of early morning to the flickering lights of evening, the edges of night offer photographers opportunities to create suggestive, evocative, and moody images of the world.  We are pleased to welcome back the extraordinary photographer, writer, and educator Sean Kernan as the juror for this exhibition.  For this exhibition, Sean will choose 40 photographs for display at PhotoPlace Gallery from June 18 - July 13. He will also select up to 35 additional photographs for the gallery's Online Annex. All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes. Submission fee: $25 for five photos, $6 each additional photo.

Actors without teeth....

Call me cruel, heartless, savage and mean even...but I just had to repost this....for much more and many laughs....see here...the blunders or wonders of photoshop. Scary, frightening....isn't it amazing how we come to expect and presume what is and isn't beauty? And, ahem....where are the men?

I post this as a probable reaction to the fact that I have a dentist appointment this afternoon! However, I still think this spoof is sexist. But, it did make me laugh!

Exhibition 'Street' at the MET

Hey folks,
I saw three amazing exhibitions last week at the MET....special highlights of the 'Street' exhibition were James Nares video installation of NYC streets made from a car with a high speed camera that has been slowed down....awesome!! See the image below...people standing in front of the screen. Mesmerizing!

Also a great Eggleston show which is part of 'street' which shows about 35 dye transfer prints from the 70s which are still holding up as excellent.

The second part of the 'Faking it' show from last year is still on display...people who have used photoshop to make their work...awesome!! Kelli Connell, Nancy Davenport, Nancy Bruson et al, are all represented. All good shows. And pay what you will admission fee!

Check out the NYT article about Museums wanting to expand their photography collections here: Its really good.

Still from James Nares NYC piece at the MET. Fabulous!

The Look 3 Festival of the Photograph

Hey 2B'ers!
I am attending the Look3 Festival of the Photograph at Charlottesville, VA in June.

I am going (booked my tickets and all!) and would love to take a group of students with me whom are interested in having a 3 day immersion experience! I've been twice before and its a fabulous event.

The dates are: June 13-15 2013.

“Pinch me if I’m dreaming, but walking down the mall of Charlottesville last night was like being in Arles in the late 1970s. Photographers everywhere, clumps of them, sitting at outdoor cafes as the heat of the day left the pavement, a palpable sense of excited anticipation before Mary Ellen Mark’s talk…. All that was missing was the sight of a young Ralph Gibson holding court surrounded by a bevy of eager, attractive admirers.”
- Andy Grundberg, The New York Times
LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph is a celebration of photography, created by photographers, for those who share a passion for the still image. The Festival features exhibits and on-stage appearances of our INsight artists, as well as exhibitions, outdoor projections, workshops and interviews over three days and nights.
Billed as “3 days of peace, love and photography,”the Festival is designed to bring together the international photography community and create opportunities for attendees and artists to share images, ideas, and to be inspired."

You can also become a volunteer if you want!

Volunteering at LOOK3 is a great way to experience the festival, meet new people, and make an important contribution to the success of these three days in Charlottesville. Volunteers will receive a free LOOK3 T-shirt and complimentary tickets to our opening and closing events.
Want to join our team? Fill out our Volunteer Survey.
Please contact volunteers@look3.org with any questions.

See here for details about the festival.

This year, the line up is incredible!!

Random exhibition name generator

OK then....I've been wracking my brains about the show....and I found online some sites that randomly generate exhibition titles!

http://www.mit.edu/~ruchill/lazycurator.html   this is one that came out of MIT and here is another:

http://www.generatorland.com/

There are many 'generator' sites that you can plug in a name and a program will put out several possibilites. I quite like this idea. I'll post some of the random names and bring them in for you to take a look!
